Which Supply Chain Decisions Are Actually Worth Automating
Not every decision benefits from automation. A simple test — frequency, latency and cost of error — helps leaders focus AI investment where it repays.
Supply chain teams make thousands of decisions a week. Only some are worth handing to a model. Three properties separate the candidates from the distractions.
Frequency
High-frequency decisions — replenishment, allocation, routing — accumulate value quickly when improved by a few percentage points. A rare, strategic decision is usually better served by a human with better information than by automation.
Latency
When the window to act is short and the data is available, machine speed is decisive. When the window is long, the marginal benefit of automation shrinks and the case for augmentation grows.
Cost of error
Automate confidently where errors are cheap and reversible. Where a mistake is expensive or hard to undo, keep a person in the loop and use intelligence to inform, not replace, the call.
